How to properly clean and maintain our carpets!

Handmade rugs need care on a weekly and yearly basis, which we can do ourselves at home by following the instructions below. But every 5 years they will need a deep cleaning done by experts.

Weekly maintenance and cleaning of handmade rugs:

Woolen carpets

Vacuum up to 600 watts in the direction of the pile.

Silk carpets

Do not use a vacuum cleaner! It needs gentle brushing in the direction of the pile with a soft or medium, nylon or bristle (not wire) brush. A gentle shake once a month completes the silk carpet cleaning routine.

Silk and wool carpets

They are cleaned just like woolen ones. Do not press hard with the vacuum cleaner on the parts that have silk.

Wall carpets

Light brushing as for silk carpets 1 or 2 times a month.

Annual maintenance of handmade carpets

Woolen carpets

It is necessary to keep the carpet like new after years and not to be affected by dust on its longevity.

With a special duster, lightly tap the carpet from the back, so that the dust moves from the warp, where it has settled, to the surface of the pile.

With the vacuum cleaner set to the special power "for carpets" and with the special nozzle, pull the dust that has settled on the surface, always in the direction of the pile.

Prepare the special solution, with neutral soap supplied by Lefko which is suitable for woolen carpets and upholstery, in a ratio of 1 to 50 ml of warm water. In other words, pour 10 ml of shampoo into half a liter of water. Make sure the detergent is completely dissolved.

Soak a white cloth in the solution, and rub it on the corner of the carpet. If the cloth becomes colored, contact us. If the cloth does not stain, follow the instructions below:

Brush the carpet, in the direction of the pile, with a soft brush dipped in the solution. Rinse with clean water. Be careful with the final rinse so as not to leave traces of detergent on the carpet.

Be careful not to wet the base of the carpet (warp), which would cause the carpet to lose its elasticity and harden. If the carpet is very wet, dry from the back with a towel, absorbing the moisture.

Have a sunny day and clean your carpets in the wee hours of the morning. You will be sure that a quick drying will protect the carpet by laying it out on a flat veranda or balcony until the evening in the shade.

We would like to emphasize that professional cleaning with white vinegar makes the colors of the carpet more vivid and also has a disinfecting effect. Its energy, however, is limited only to the surface of the pole.

Silk carpets

Shake the rug by hand to remove any dust that has settled on the knots and warp. Prepare a solution of one part white vinegar(*) and three parts water.

Use a clean soft leather, natural and not synthetic (glass cleaning leathers are perfectly fine). Dip the leather in the solution and squeeze it very well. Keeping the surface of the carpet completely flat, rub it with the leather gently, always in the direction of the pile.

Dry the surface of the carpet with a hair dryer.
With a clean dry leather rub the carpet gently and always in the direction of the pile.
Before attempting to clean the carpet in the above manner, try the white cloth test as described for woolen carpets.
